Digital archiving is becoming an increasingly
important issue within the earth sciences and related disciplines.
For public sector organisations in the UK, additional impetus comes
from Government targets for all newly created public records to
be electronically stored and retrievable by 2004.
The ability to preserve and access electronic documents
in the long term requires active management throughout their life
cycle, and the structure of any archiving strategy must reflect
this. Adequate measures must be taken to ensure that data is created
in a format suitable for long term storage, and procedures developed
for format migration, media refreshment, and to enable efficient
access and reuse. These measures must be applied to both digitally
born material and digitisation of legacy hardcopy resources.
Codex is able to give guidance on good practice
and implement suitable electronic document management strategies
for many types of organisation. We have particular expertise in
applications of the Dublin Core metadata standard for effective
resource discovery, and in the development of metadata recording
for geophysics, CAD and topographic survey information types. We
can advise on copyright issues and in the development of online
archive information systems.
